About Dr. de Asla

Richard de Asla, MD, is a board-certified orthopedic surgeon with subspecialty training in foot and ankle surgery. His skills and expertise in treating conditions of the foot and ankle include both non-surgical and surgical options. His clinical interests include deformity and bunion corrections, trauma and sports injuries, diabetic foot conditions and arthritic conditions afflicting the foot and ankle. Dr. de Asla has the distinction of performing Massachusetts General Hospital’s first total ankle joint replacement in April 2010. His research interests include kinematics and biomechanics of the foot and ankle. He is extensively published in the field of foot and ankle surgery.

Dr. de Asla received his medical degree, magna cum laude from the State University of New York at Buffalo. His postdoctoral training residency included two years of general surgery from June 1995 through June 1997, at the University of Rochester, Strong Memorial Hospital, Rochester, New York. He completed his residency in orthopedic surgery, July 1997 through July 2001, at University Hospitals of Cleveland, Case Western Reserve University, Cleveland, Ohio. Dr. de Asla completed his fellowship in foot and ankle surgery, August 1, 2001-July 31, 2002, at the Hospital for Special Surgery, Cornell University, New York, New York.

For eight years, Dr. de Asla served as the director of the foot and ankle orthopaedic division at the Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston. He was a member of the Harvard Medical School faculty from September 2004 until joining NCH in 2015. He is a member of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons and the American Orthopaedic Foot and Ankle Society. He serves as a reviewer for the Journal of Bone and Joint Surgery and the Journal of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons. His recreational interests include traveling, running, cycling, music and photography.
